Our Answers...

Q: What are the requirements for buying a newsagency?
A: Money! You will need to get an indication of what your price range is by talking to an industry specialist finance broker, who will take into consideration the establishment costs specific to the newsagency industry which will add onto the purchase price. A quick, no obligation phone call will head you in the right direction. See finance brokers (next question) for more information. It is also imperative to have an industry specialist accountant do the due diligence. Some banks will require a specialist regardless. The investigation is not a normal accounting exercise - think of it more as forensic accounting - which is why a specialist is required.

NB: Outgoing newsagents are under contract to the publisher/distributor to provide a minimum of 3 weeks training in the newsagency. The most common method is for 2 weeks of training before possession and 1 week after possession.

Q: How much deposit will I need?
A:
You will need 10% of goodwill and Fixtures and Fittings, paid only on exchange of contracts. The balance is paid on possession. For more information on goodwill, you can contact Australian Newsagency Sales (ANS) on 02 8425 9600.

Q: How can I get more information about the industry?
A:
You can attend one of the free ANS one-day seminars or read some of their newsletters online at www.newsales.com.au.
